The art of the tie

The tie and shoes are probably the accessories that most reflect the style of the wearer. Brummell, the undisputable master of Dandyism succinctly put it: “The tie is the man who wears it”. If you are not used to wearing one, and one day you need to, it may well be a challenging experience. There are so many aspects to consider: the fabric, the colour, the type of the knot, how to match it with the shirt and the jacket. If you aren´t good at choosing colours and you have to wear a suit over the Christmas holidays, then go for monochrome silk. Navy blue is one of the safest and most elegant options. It goes well with a blue or white shirt, as well as with stripes or checks.

If you want to convey a less serious and funkier look, then you could try a woollen one and wear it with a tweed or flannel jacket.

Knitted ties with a straight cut-off ending are also good at working this young look. If you fancy a printed tie, forget big, loud prints and go for small prints. Spots are always good, even with striped shirts, and if you are up for it, why not try ties in Liberty mini prints in dark shades; they are an interesting and subtle innovation.

If you like stripes, always wear them with a plain shirt, and remember that in addition to diagonal stripes, you can also find ties with horizontal stripes. They are a good way to add a bit of a difference without looking too in your face.

On the subject of knots, there are definite trends and genuine theories. There were even two scientists, Thomas M. Fink and Yong Mao, who decided to investigate all the possible ways of making knots; they concluded that there were 85 different ways to tie a tie but that only 10 of them were really aesthetic. From a practical point of view, knowing to make a good Simple Knot as well as a Half Windsor is more than enough. For lovers of the subject, see more at www.nudo-de-corbata.com

I wish all of you, Global Nomads out there and Preventi team, a Happy New Year!
