Instagram: designermannyc“Fashion fades, but style is eternal” said Yves Saint Laurent. And this is what Richard Haines does in his “What I Saw Today” blog: to transform, pencil in hand, fashion in style. His quick lines capture in a superb exercise of synthesis from the stylish hipsters in his New York neighbourhood to the latest trends in Milan Fashion Week. Behind the educated eye, there is a Calvin Klein, Bill Blass and Perry Ellis exdesigner. Now he illustrates what others design, and we see him happy. Next to the regular comissions for London Times Sunday Magazine, The New York Times, Mr.Porter, J.Crew or Prada, Richard keeps recording little magic moments of daily beauty. This October will be five years since he made life much prettier. Happy birthday, dear Richard!
My favorite colors are…navy blue and white to wear. And almost every color around me, they make me so happy! I feel at home… In New York and of course in my home in Brooklyn. I like the smell of…freshly ground coffe, clean laundry flowers and babies -oh gosh the smell of babies is heaven. When my daughter was a baby I would just love to hold her and take in that smell. I never travel without charcoal pencils, extra moleskin books, phone chargers and a new magazine! I love the taste of… Croissants, garden tomatoes in August, lobster rolls, kisses, chap stick, good dry champagne, olives and wooden pencils.
What I love about portraying people is…Sitting with them, hearing their stories. Every one has a tale to tell-pain, joy, it’s all there. An emerging talent in the fashion world…AMI, Carven and Damir Doma in Paris, Andrea Incontrini in Milan and Hood by Air, Public School and Siki in New York. This next season I will wear…A heavy cotton jacket from Engineered Garments, Acne Jeans, and of course my Preventi Shoes. Every day – I like to get it down to a uniform!
Beauty means to you…Grace, acceptance, generosity and emphaty. Confidence, self knowledge. It’s not related to money or clothes. The best place to illustrate good outfits is…In my neighborhood -in Bushwick and Williansburg, Brooklyn. The people here don’t spend a lot of time and money on it, but there is a huge amount of creativity, and swagger, and sexuality here. And I love that, that gets me excited.
My favorite app is…I would still be lost and wandering around Europe without Google Maps. And iTunes, all that music. I draw a bit on an app, but I still prefer a charcoal pencil on paper! One of my favorite books is..The French book on men’s fashion ‘Des Modes Et Des Hommes’ It’s a bible on menswear, and because it’s French, it’s extra good! A good tip when choosing an outfit…Buy it in navy blue!
The next place I would like to visit is…I haven’t been to Hong Kong and Tokyo in a while, and I really feel the urge to go. It’s just kind of a wonderful jolt to go to places so different-so much energy and vitality and new ways of doing things. I love that. And Rome-I need to spend more time there! Love is…Acceptance. A dream…A dream as a vision-a studio in Paris to paint. A day dream? I think of my daughter when she was a baby-that was one of the best periods of my life.
