Global Nomads: Sibella Court

Love is…

The thing we have inside is what best defines us. Sibella Court knows well what we are referring to. She is an interior designer with a successful 20 years trajectory creating spaces in accordance with her personality and her clients’. After ten years living in New York, she found Sydney, the perfect place to grow up and to be situated at. Court’s work does not end with her projects as an interior stylist, her books “Etcetera etc.”, “The Stylist Guide to NYC”, “Nomad”, “Bowerbird” and her recent book “Gypsy: A World of Color & Interiors” have got her as an icon of good taste in the interior design world. Her name has appeared in numerous important magazines such as Vogue, Harper’s Bazaar or InsideOut, where she collaborates regularly showing her vision to the world. After working for Bergdorf Goodman, Jo Malone, Donna Karan New York or Bloomingdales, she decided to open her own space in the big Australian metropolis: “The Society Inc”. The boutique is opened as a glance in which she wants to show everything she is interested in and she is always searching for new talents and products to position her store. We have talked to her to know closer her tastes and to discover the more intimate side of Sibella Court.

My favorite colors are… I love every colour, it all depends on my mood and what day it is. Tattoo and Ship Chandler from my own paint range are two of my favourite colours at the momento! I like the taste of… Eaton Mess I really feel at home… wherever I lay my head at night. I’m constanly on the go, so I have to make my home wherever my daughter and I are. I never travel without… my amulets, my Canon, my moleskin notebooks, my Philsons luggage and my leatherman.  I like the smell of… a new country. I collect scents as I go, and make them into soaps when I get home. For example, when i was in Transylvania, the scent was layered with alomond Blossom, lilac, Honey and the distant smokiness of charcoal burners. I now have a Transylvania scent in my soap range that is inspired by those smells.

The best of being in movement is… being constantly inspired, looking into other cultures and ways of life, modes of transport, discovering new makers & crafters and new experiences.  My most appreciated finding is… I pick up souvenirs wherever I go in the World. I always pick up something that is made and crafted locally. I have many favourites! Some favourite finds recently are velvet ikat from the grand bazaar in Istanbul, my hand-smithed secateurs from Japan and my mother of pearl rosary beads from New Orleans.

I’m an interior designer because… I love to create spaces that transport people to another place. Somewhere that makes them notice the details and smile.  The most stunning space I have ever been is… I’m always being inspired by different spaces. Two of my favourite spaces are the Musée Histoire Naturelle in Paris and the Musée de la Chasse et de la Nature also in Paris  Beauty means to me… anything that is beautifully packaged.  Some good advice when you have to change something at home… textiles and layering is always an easy way to change a space. It is also a nice way of revealing your new treasures from your travels. Textiles can immediately change the feeling of a bedroom or living room without any effort!

My favorite book is… whatever is on my bedside table at that moment! I read so many books, and reference them every day for inspiration. Some favourites include my book Gypsy, any book by travel writer, Patrick Leigh Fermour, and Victoria Finlay’s book Travels through the Paintbox.  I always dance when I listen… Jill Scott Getting old means for me… Knowing more, reacting better, and drinking great red wine! The next place I would like to visit is… I always have a top 5 list of places i want to go. At the momento, the next place I want to visit is Petra. A good tip when I pack… I always take my own linen with me, as you never know where you are going to find yourself! Also, I look for treasures that I can easily pack, such as textiles and frames.  A dream… I’d really love to expand my Business The Society inc. to showcase my own product ranges, as well as all the cool craftsman, makers & Designers that I know so that customers can enjoy them! I want to open the stores in Sydney, Melbourne, New York, Los Angeles and Japan.

Love is…  is that a song? The best of living in Australia right now… I live in Australia because of the ocean and the Beach. They influence everything I do. There are so many super cool and exciting things in design coming out of Australia at the moment! My favorite place to be alone is… whilst I’m travelling.  A city it has surprised me lately is… all new cities surprise me! New Orleans was a great surprise, so many layers and cultures all in one place.  The last crazy thing I have done… Going to New Orleans during Jazz Fest A secret source of inspiration… museums and botanic Gardens.

To be a Global Nomads means to me… Visiting places I’ve never been before, as well as getting to know some of the old favourites even better.
