Thierry Augustin in few words.
My favorite colors are… purple and blue. I like the taste of… a rich cognac, whiskey, or bourbon. I really feel at home… with my wife by my side and in my favorite pair of sweats from Helmut Lang. I never travel without… great hair and skin care products! I like the smell of… the outdoors! Grasses, flowers, trees–it’s a great contrast from what you usually smell in New York. The best part of traveling… is seeing how the pace changes from city to city. Sometimes you need to slow down and just enjoy the moment, other times it’s just a pit stop on the journey to a more important destination.
I started Genteel Flair because… I wanted to share the things I care about with people around the world with the same values. Men’s style, travel, food, personal development–it all makes for a life well lived. The most stunning piece of cloth I have ever put on is… a leopard print velvet fabric that was made into a shawl collar tuxedo jacket by the folks at Alexander Nash that I wore for a New Year’s party. To me, Fashion means… evolving. Tastes change, colors change, silhouettes change, and so does the way you put it all together. The journey of dressing up reveals more about our character than we notice. I think it’s the best way to see how you’ve grown, in spite of and because of all the influences around you. Some good advice when you are dressing up is… consider your complexion first. Find a color that suits you best and build a well-fitting wardrobe around it. Navy blue favors me best, but that also allows me to add in earth tones (olive, brown, maroon, mustard). My favorite food is… lasagna!
I always dance when I listen to… reggae or soca. There’s nothing better. For me, getting old means… that I can pass along more life lessons. Experience is a great teacher, but wisdom comes from knowing when to go through it yourself and when to take the advice of others who’ve already been down that road. I want to help others how my mentors have helped me. The next city I would like to visit is… San Diego. I’ve only heard great things so I definitely have to confirm. A good tip when I pack is… to plan outfits beforehand. Every time I haven’t done that, I end up over packing abs dragging my weekender bag through the airport. A dream of mine is… to spend three months on vacation, totally immersed in a new culture. I’m more creative when… I surround myself with creative things and people. Whether it’s stimulating conversation or art or a film, the environment really helps to spark new ideas and new perspectives.
Love is… a daily decision. Now that I’m going onto my second year of marriage, I’m realizing how important it is to start with that determination every morning, so whatever we go through in that day, we know that one thing hasn’t changed. The best part about living in Brooklyn right now… is trying to catch up with all the restaurants that are opening! My favorite place to be alone is… in my thoughts. Nothing like some down time with a pair of quality headphones and a great jazz sound track. A city it has surprised me lately is… Las Vegas. My wife and I spent some time there (away from the strip) and waking up to views of the mountains and watching how the scene changed across the day was an unexpected treat–definitely not the ‘Neon Boulevard’ we’re used to. To be a Global Nomad means to… look for opportunities to experience something new, as often as possible. Travel is the key to so many doors that would remain locked if you never left your zip code. You don’t always have to go far, just go.
