Mats Gustafson’s zen watercolour drawings

Pero a veces el choque de lo viejo es más interesante que lo contemporáneo”.Let’s stop just for a while the New York-London-Milan-Paris here and now let’s take a moment with Another Magazine. There Kin Woo talks with fashion illustrator Mats Gustafson about his last exhibition in Stockholm, Fashion, Figures, Faces: Mats Gustafson, a 30-year retrospective about his work.

Discovered by Grace Coddington at the beginning of the Eighties, the Swedish illustrator is a master capturing the essence of style with calculated watercoloured stains. With an exquisite simplicity, he evoques textures and silhouettes from the best fashion designers giving enough space to let your imagination run wild. He is an artisan, they say. And we couldn’t agree more.

“I don’t want to be considered a throwback or a conservative person, but I am very content to work with my hands and paper and I’m more inspired by that – I like to see the presence of the hand. It sounds so reactionary really because I try to keep an open eye and mind. But sometimes the shock of the old is more interesting than the contemporary.”Let’s stop just for a while the New York-London-Milan-Paris here and now let’s take a moment with Another Magazine.
