An Adventurer Explores the Art World

1. Obsesiónate.
2. Acepta que no hay reglas, sólo tratos.
3. Ama la pieza, no el precio.
4. Ten talento para el talento.

On the occasion of the Erling Kagge “A Poor Collector’s Guide to Buying Great Art” book launch, Gestalten, the publisher, has created an inspiring video called “An Adventurer Explores the Art World.” Kagge, a Norwegian explorer, lawyer and writer starts the piece remembering one of the best piece of advice he ever received “Think ahead, travel light and leave your fears behind you”.  Kagge, the first person to surmount the “three poles”, North, South and the Summit of Everest, thinks that this rule can also be applied to start a path as collector in the art world.

Author of the motto: “If you can dream it, you can do it.”, the explorer says that passion, intuition and knowledge are important to build a collection, even on a limited budget. Absolutely influenced by his arduous explorer spirit, Kagge reminds us that “You collect with your eyes, but also with your nose and your ears.” Based on his own experience, he has created the guide to those who want to buy art but don’t know how or where to do it.

Here are some of the main keys to be successful art collector:

1. Be obsessed.
2. Accept that there are no rules, only deals.
3. Love the piece, not the price.
4. Have a talent for talent.
